Regularly regarded as one of the very best Links courses in the world Carnoustie has been host to the Open Championship on 7 occasions. The two most recent Opens are probably amongst the best ever played for different reasons.
In 1999 when Paul Lawrie came from 10 shots back to finally beat Jean van de Velde in a play off when the latter stood on the 72nd hole needing only a double bogey 6 to win the Claret jug. Then in 2007 as many as 10 players had a realistic chance of winning the Open with about 6 holes to go. Only after a play off did Padraig Harrington become the 1st European to win the event since Lawrie in '99 when he defeated Sergio Garcia over the extra 4 holes.
