Designed by Frank Pinnink, Palmares golf course is one of the gems of European golf. The scenery is outstanding with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, Alvor Estuary and the coastline beyond.
Pinnink made use of two different types of space when designing this course. Five holes run along the seashore in true links-style, the others are laid out amidst a much hillier pine forest with some magnificent views over the Atlantic.
The most challenging of the holes at Palmares is the 550 metre fifth, with a narrow fairway which runs parallel to the beach. If you are able to keep out of the dunes on either side, the third shot can be played over the trees direct to the raised green tucked in to the right.
Overall Palmares has an idyllic setting and is an interesting course. Although challenging, it is suitable for golfers of all abilities.
